ABOUT PORT MACDONNELL
This historic township (population 700) is well known as "The Rock Lobster Capital" of South Australia. A popular destination for a relaxed family holiday, it marks the end of the Great Ocean Road and the beginning of the Limestone Coast, just 28km south of Mt Gambier.
WHAT TO SEE
Surrounded by rugged coastline, Port MacDonnell is a charming town full of history and places of interest, including The Maritime Museum, The Old Customs House, An Historic Mural, The Petrified Forest, Adam Lindsay Gordon's Cottage, the Old Lighthouse and a Penguin Colony.
WHAT TO DO
Activities include boating, swimming (beach), 4-Wheel driving, diving through underwater kelp forests and shipwrecks, sinkhole diving (Ewen's Ponds, Picaninnie Ponds), tennis, golf, playgrounds, seafront BBQs, beachwalking, sailing, birdwatching and all types of fishing; jetty, breakwater, rock, offshore and surf.
NIGHT ENTERTAINMENT
Meals can be enjoyed at the local pub/bistro, 'Periwinkles' cafe/restaurant on Sea Parade, two Fish and Chips shops, and on weekends, the golf and football clubrooms.
Mt Gambier is an easy 20 minute drive away with many restaurants, live music venues, cinema and a couple of nightclubs.
